One of Jesus' twelve disciples, Saint Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark, and became known as Mark the Evangelist. Almost twenty years after the Ascension of Jesus, Mark traveled to Alexandria where he founded the Church of Alexandria, which is known today as the Coptic Catholic Church. He was the first bishop of Alexandria, and is considered the original founder of Christianity in Africa.
