Saint Camillus is the patron saint of physician, nurses and the ill.
During the carnage of the Battle of Canizza in 1601, Saint Camillus led his religious order to the battleground to attend to the wounded. The tent they had erected as a makeshift hospital, along with all their equipment, was completely destroyed in the fighting. Everything burned except the red cross of the religious habit worn by one of his monks. Camillus took this as evidence of divine approval of his brotherhood, and spent the rest of his life healing the sick, even when he himself could barely walk, and had to crawl to work.
