 Historically, the first coins were developed independently as far apart as Archaic Greece and Ancient China around 600-700 BC. By the time the Roman Empire was established, they began using a standardized Roman currency. More often than not cast with a likeness of the period’s ruler (be it an emperor or king), coins have transcended from simple units of currency to artifacts, collector’s items, and, in their own way, tiny works of art.
